Walk down the cleaning aisle and every bottle promises to kill germs. But most “natural” recipes you find online—especially the ones built on vinegar—are cleaners, not disinfectants. They lift dirt and may reduce some bacteria, but they won’t reliably kill viruses like influenza or coronavirus. The real difference comes down to one number: 70. A properly mixed alcohol solution at that concentration is the most effective non-toxic DIY option. Here is exactly how to make it, the recipes that genuinely work, and the ones that don’t.
Why 70% Alcohol Is The Gold Standard
The CDC’s recommendation is straightforward: alcohol concentrations below 70% (isopropyl or ethyl) do not reliably kill many viruses and bacteria. Above 90% evaporates too quickly to maintain the wet contact time needed. So 70% is the sweet spot—enough water to slow evaporation, enough alcohol to break down pathogen cell walls.
The recipe is simple if you start with 99% isopropyl alcohol: mix 2 parts alcohol to 1 part water. Pour into a glass spray bottle, add 15 drops of lemon or lavender essential oil if you want a scent (it does nothing for disinfection), and store it in a cool, dark place.

The Vinegar Problem

What To Skip And Why
Some common “non-toxic” approaches are genuinely dangerous. And regardless of what you use, the biggest mistake is wiping the surface dry before the contact time elapses. A 30-second alcohol spray wiped off at 15 seconds has not done its job.
